Making a Difference at Stevens
Opened in 2019, the Gateway Academic Center (GAC or Center) was part of a broad campaign by the Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens) to modernize its infrastructure and transform the university into a 21st-century campus for teaching, research, learning, and living.

Group PMX provided project management and scheduling services to Stevens for the ground-up construction of the GAC. The project involved enabling work, decommissioning the existing power plant that supplied the lower campus, and demolishing an existing 3-story building, power plant, and 7-story chimney stack.

The four-story, 89,500-SF complex comprises two buildings – South Hall and Gianforte Family Hall – connected by a glass sky bridge. The sky bridge also creates meeting and seminar space with Hudson River and Manhattan views. The buildings house conference rooms, reception halls, areas for student organizations, multipurpose flex spaces, 10 technology-rich classrooms, 45 faculty offices, and 13 leading-edge laboratories.

State-of-the-Art Laboratories
The laboratories include the Center for Healthcare Innovation, a 3D tissue culture lab with a dedicated room for DNA amplification, the Health & Artificial Intelligence Lab, the Prototype Object Fabrication Lab, and the Cybersecurity Lab.

Achieved Sustainability Commitment
In 2020, the GAC received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The Center was constructed with green construction tactics and designed to achieve water savings, energy efficiency, and exceptional air quality to promote a healthy and productive environment for students, faculty, and staff.

The building has received several awards and recognition for its exceptional sustainability design and its contribution to the campus and community, including the 2021 USGBC Leadership Award for the Middle Atlantic & New England region.
