NYU Langone Health – Long Island, Various Projects

New Trauma Center

Group PMX provided Owner Representative Services for this new one-story, 2,800 gross square foot, modular structure extension adjacent to the existing Emergency Department. The new Trauma Center provides three new trauma bays, two trauma holding bays, and a reconfigured ambulance triage entrance for improved emergency vehicle parking and stretcher patient in-flow to the Trauma Center and Emergency Department.

The construction – comprising of installation of nine modular unit structures fabricated in Indiana and Illinois – allowed for a shorter on-site building construction schedule and lower building costs compared to conventional ground-up construction. The modular units landed within one weekend and the facility opened to patients three months later.  Conventional stick-built would have required at least six to nine months of in-place construction. The cost per square foot using modular construction was approximately 33% of traditional construction costs, representing a tremendous saving to the Hospital. The modular construction of this highly sensitive Trauma Center was the first of its kind at NYU Langone Health Hospital and serves as a model for upcoming projects.

New Academic and Research Center

Group PMX provided Owner’s Representative services for the construction of the new Academic and Research Center.  This 125,000 square foot building has five floors above ground and includes:

  • Areas for community outreach and administrative functions, a 320 seat auditorium, and meeting and study rooms
  • A clinical skills and medical simulation center with clinical spaces for programs serving different patient populations
  • Expansion areas for future bench research, wet laboratory space, laboratory support functions, and administrative areas
  • A space for clinical/translational research with an open gathering area near the circulation stair which was designed to encourage interdisciplinary communication and collaboration.

In addition to being a state-of-the-art facility, the new building is one of the most sustainable in the area.  Research and scientific trials are being conducted for diabetes, cardio metabolic disorders, infant prematurity, perinatal conditions, chronic diseases, and aging. Group PMX worked collaboratively with the project team including Perkins Eastman (Architect), Lend Lease (Construction Manager), and NYU-WUH Facilities Management and Stakeholders.

Generator Replacement and Roll up Connection

Group PMX provided upgrades to NYU Langone Health – Long Island’s (formally Winthrop Hospital) emergency power system by replacing two generators with new 600kW and 350 kW H.O. Penn caterpillar engines and installing manual transfer switches with quick connects for a temporary roll up generator for five emergency generators on campus. The Emergency generators at the hospital do not run in parallel, which makes the roll up connection critical if any one generator is down for any period of time.

Interventional Radiology Bi-Plane Replacement

The replacement of the existing end-of-life Bi-Plane unit with a new Toshiba Infinix unit required a full gut renovation of the 731 square foot space to reconfigure the layout and provide a larger, more efficient procedure room. The project required close coordination with the Emergency Department below which needed to have a portion of their space closed for one week for work related to under slab conduits and the support structure.

1530 Front Street Imaging, Orthopedics, Physical Therapy, Neurology

The project will focus on planning and design management of a new 65,000 square foot medical facility which will house Imaging, Orthopedics, Physical Therapy, and Neurology practices. NYU’s goal was to improve patient experience and satisfaction, and to increase capacity in order to prevent them from losing patients to other non-NYU-WUH facilities. The program will provide 51 exam rooms, two GE 3T MRIs, a GE CT, three X-rays, and two ultra-sound rooms.

264 OCR CyberKnife, LINAC and CT

This project was coordinated over several phases to minimize disruption to patient treatment. Phase 1, is an emergency replacement of the mapping CT which went off line in December 2016 along with a cosmetic renovation as the CT was not readily available. Phase 2 provides a 2,000 square foot, single-story CyberKnife vault building addition along with an exam room, equipment room, and a sub-waiting area. The addition occupied the parking lot, so we coordinated a variance with the Village of Mineola to allow a patient drop-off area and parking across the street in the hospital’s parking garage. Phase 3  replaced the existing outdated Varian 21EX LINAC with a new state-of-the-art TrueBeam and required additional shielding and conduit distribution.

ASU OR Surgical Light Installation

Group PMX provided oversight of the replacement of outdated surgical lights in 8 ORs with new LED lights. This included management of a structural engineer for structural support and a GC providing power, steel work, carpentry, painters, and laborers to complete the job. This was done during weekend hours to minimize the downtime of the ORs.

Surgery and Vascular Administration Offices Build Out

The build out of a new office suite for the Surgery and Vascular Department’s administrative faculty includes interior demolition, abatement, and interior fit out of an existing suite in Mineola, NY. The renovation of the 4,300 square foot suite required roughly 6,800 square feet of asbestos containing material to be removed. The building’s core and shell upgrades included new utility tie-ins and sprinklers. The interiors included offices, work areas, and a conference room with new finishes and furniture throughout.

Bethpage Primary Care Renovation

The 6,200 square foot practice includes exam rooms, administrative offices, call center, reception area, and waiting room. The renovation included the replacement of all existing wall covering and flooring, the installation of new lighting and millwork, and new furniture and medical equipment. Done in phases on nights and weekends, the work was completed with no impact to the practice’s work hours or daily operation.

South Shore Heart Associates Renovation

The renovation of the South Shore Heart Associates practice in Rockville Centre, NY included a full cosmetic upgrade. The 4,200 square foot practice includes exam rooms, echocardiogram rooms, a nuclear imaging room, administrative offices, reception area, and waiting room. The renovation included the replacement of all existing wall covering and flooring, new furniture for the waiting room and reception areas, and new medical equipment. Done in phases on nights and weekends, the work was completed with no impact to the practice’s work hours or daily operation.
