Q: What leadership qualities have been most important in your career progression from project engineer to senior project manager?

A: Throughout my 12+ years in heavy civil construction, I’ve learned that effective leadership starts with clear communication and attention to detail. Managing complex infrastructure projects requires you to be the central hub of information flow between design teams, clients, trade partners, and field operations. I’ve found that my ability to multitask while maintaining precision has been crucial.

Leading estimating teams taught me that successful leadership means empowering others while ensuring accountability. When you’re simultaneously handling dozens of projects, you learn to delegate effectively while staying engaged with critical decisions. My experience has shown me that the best leaders are those who can adapt to shifting priorities while keeping their teams focused on the end goal.

Q: What aspects of project management do you find most rewarding?

A: The most rewarding aspect is seeing complex visions become reality while knowing that your work directly impacts how people move through the world. When you’re managing the construction of transit facilities or airport terminals, you’re literally building the infrastructure that connects communities. But on a day-to-day level, I find tremendous satisfaction in problem-solving and coordination.

There’s something energizing about taking a design conflict that seems impossible and working with engineers and consultants to find an elegant solution.

I also love the mentoring aspect, helping junior team members develop their skills and watching them take on greater responsibilities. Every project teaches you something new, and being able to share that knowledge with others amplifies the impact.

Q: How do you balance technical precision with the need for quick decision-making in fast-paced environments?

A: This balance is particularly critical in active operational environments like airports, where delays can have cascading effects. My approach is to establish clear decision-making frameworks before pressure situations arise. For routine technical issues, I empower field teams to make decisions within defined parameters, which speeds response time while maintaining quality standards.

For more complex issues, I’ve developed rapid consultation processes. I know exactly who to call for structural questions, who handles regulatory concerns, and who can provide cost implications quickly. Having strong relationships with subject matter experts means I can get authoritative input fast. I also believe in documentation. Even quick decisions need to be recorded and communicated to relevant parties to prevent confusion later.

Q: What specific qualities do you believe have contributed to your success in managing large-scale infrastructure projects?

A: My success stems from a combination of technical precision and people-focused leadership. Having an eye for detail is non-negotiable when you’re managing billion-dollar projects where small oversights can have massive consequences. My background in estimating has given me an intuitive understanding of project economics, which helps in making real-time decisions that keep projects on track.

But equally important is my ability to facilitate collaboration across disciplines. Complex infrastructure projects involve so many moving parts: engineers, consultants, operations staff, and regulatory bodies. Success comes from creating clarity in chaos and ensuring everyone has the information they need when they need it.

Transform your career.
